Givens LifeMinistries Renamed Givens Community Impact

The outreach division of Givens Communities has a new name and new leadership helping guide its expanding mission. Former Givens Highland Farms Social Work Navigator Joey Abel has stepped into the role of Director of Givens Community Impact, a position that reflects a broader vision for how Givens engages with and supports the wider region. This work now operates as part of the Philanthropy Department, which strengthens the organization’s ability to connect resources, build partnerships, and expand service beyond its campuses.

During a recent conversation with the Philanthropy Team, Joey shared insights about his transition into the role, his goals, and the story behind the division’s name change from Givens LifeMinistries to Givens Community Impact. He explained that the change originated as the leadership team began reimagining the potential of the outreach position. As the scope of the work grew and became more closely aligned with the Philanthropy Department’s focus on engagement and community partnerships, it became clear that the original name no longer reflected the breadth of opportunities ahead.

“The Givens leadership team, in reimagining the potential of this position, felt that the name itself needed to be reimagined,” Joey said. “Ultimately, they felt Community Impact best encapsulated the new vision for what the position could be.”

For Joey, the shift in name carried personal significance. “I think that words are most powerful when they are chosen with thoughtfulness and intentionality. These are two characteristics that I strive toward in my life personally and professionally, so it was a very meaningful choice for me,” he shared.

The integration of Givens Community Impact into the Philanthropy Department reinforces the organization’s commitment, championed by Kevin Schwab and the broader leadership team, to make an impact for good in the larger community across the region and state. Working alongside philanthropy allows the outreach efforts to draw from shared relationships, community connections, and mission-driven initiatives.

Givens Community Impact advances this mission by developing partnerships with healthcare providers, faith communities, universities, and social and aging services organizations. Just a few months into his role, Joey described the experience as energizing and inspiring. “Getting out into all our communities and the larger community and learning about all the amazing things happening has been overwhelming in the most positive way,” he said.

Looking ahead, Joey emphasized that his primary goal is to listen and learn. “Identifying passions, connecting people and resources, and building relationships are my primary focuses,” he noted. These early efforts, grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and connection, will help shape the future direction of Givens Community Impact and strengthen its service to the broader region.

Together, we can open doors, build connections, and uplift lives throughout our community. To help carry this mission forward, please consider a gift to Givens Community Impact: https://givensphilanthropy.org/giving/
